Innovative options for depression
Many New Directions Mental Health clinics offer TMS or Spravato® for adults who have not found meaningful relief from antidepressant medications. These services are provided by trained providers and are used alongside ongoing therapy or psychiatric care. These innovative depression treatment options can open new possibilities for people living with long-term depression by offering approaches that work differently from traditional medications.
What is TMS?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non-drug treatment for major depressive disorder that offers another path forward when traditional medications have not provided relief from depression. 83% of patients who have received NeuroStar TMS treatment experience an improvement in the severity of their depression symptoms. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to activate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. This FDA-cleared treatment may be an option for adults looking for added support in their depression care. Sessions take place in the clinic, and most people can comfortably return to their daily activities after treatment.
What is Spravato?
Spravato® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray treatment for adults with difficult-to-treat depression. It is paired with an oral antidepressant and is administered in-clinic under medical supervision. Spravato® has been shown to provide faster improvement in depression symptoms compared to placebo, with some people noticing meaningful changes within the first 24 hours and continued progress over the following weeks.
