Marissa Thomas, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

I am a clinician at our Meadowlands clinic who provides therapy services!

A child of about 6/8 years old begins coming to me. The parent describes episodes of frustration, giving up either in school or on tasks at home. The child has trouble overcoming challenging tasks. The parent wants to help their child be more resilient. The parent is having issues with their child not just giving up, but opting out of activities, at home and at school.

I would work with this child to build resilience through CBT techniques. I think it would be important to stress a growth mindset with this child. I would teach this child strategies to manage stress (box breathing, visualization, mindfulness, grounding , etc). I would help this child practice reframing their negative self talk. Identifying emotions such as anger and frustration would be key for helping this child. Once they learn to recognize and identify emotions we could work towards the child find strategies that work for him or her to help regulate their nervous system.

As a counselor, I want my clients to know that I strive to create a space where they feel safe, seen, and heard. I believe in meeting each person where they are, walking alongside them without judgment, and honoring their pace and experiences. You’re the expert on your own life — my role is to support you in uncovering your strengths, building insight, and developing tools that empower you. I value authenticity, vulnerability, and connection, and I show up as a real human in the room, hoping you’ll feel free to do the same. I’m especially passionate about working with children and families, particularly those who feel overlooked or misunderstood, and I bring a creative, flexible approach to help nurture confidence, connection, and emotional resilience.
